In the smart phone world, native apps are king, so can the mobile web still compete? You decide in this JavaScript meetup. Michael Smith, senior developer at Magnani Caruso Dutton, will give a tutorial on building mobile web apps with JavaScript built especially for WebKit-based mobile browsers (i.e., iPhone, Palm Pre, etc.). Front-end developers interested in building mobile web applications will learn how to utilize HTML5 and Javascript's newest features to begin building applications with interfaces that feel almost native. The tutorial will start with a code explanation and demonstration. Followed by an introduction to client-side storage via JavaScript. And finish up with a discussion on browser and framework support and best practices in mobile development.

We're going to talk about JavaScript performance in regular web pages, AJAX applications as well as widgets. Sergey Chernyshev of the New York Web Performance Group, will talk about JavaScript on the wire, how it affects web site performance and different techniques you can use to improve your JavaScript-heavy applications as well as just regular sites that might be hurt by badly implemented JavaScript. Sergey will also cover some network behavior specific to external JavaScript applications and why you should be careful with all the Widgets you want to plug onto your page. Ning Zhou, organizer of the NY JavaScript Meetup will discuss JavaScript performance in the browser. He will start with the importance of JavaScript performance in today's RIAs followed by a look at how JavaScript performance differs in various browsers and how this affects the coding approach. Then move on to common techniques that can help speed up client-side code. And lastly, Ning will discuss bottleneck detection in your JavaScript code so you can invent your own optimization techniques and provide a better overall user experience. Getting there Interactive One's offices are near Canal street 1 and A/C/E stations: Get directions on Google Map Street view

Add-ons are extensions of the browser that add new functionality to Firefox or change its appearance. They can range from altering the browsing experience to utilities like bookmarking and blocking ads to building social elements right into the browser. In this meetup, Karen Teng will show how AdaptiveBlue uses a combination of Javascript and XML/XSL technologies to create Glue (http://getglue.com) , a popular browser addon which automatically connects people around things they visit online. She'll highlight the differences of using Javascript to build a complex browser app as opposed to a more traditional website. AdaptiveBlue is a New York-based startup focused on applying semantic technologies to improve our web browsing experience. They are the makers of Glue (http://getglue.com) , a popular browser addon, which automatically connects people around things they visit online. Karen Teng is the VP of Engineering at AdaptiveBlue and oversees the development effort both on a technical and architectural level.

In this meetup, Ning will demonstrate Blank Slate's widget development and runtime platform, which heavily leverages the jQuery javascript framework. The Blank Slate widget platform provides non-technical users with the capability to introduce dynamic data capture, management and publishing functionality into sites, blogs, or into rich media ads via embeddable HTML widgets. In this presentation Ning will also demonstrate the new jQuery V1.6, which he integrated into the platform in 2 hours, replacing many custom UI components, that can be managed directly thru the jQuery framework.

Abstract Website authors and web developers constantly reinvent the wheel. Thousands of developers annually spend millions of hours building sites from scratch, even though most websites have similar function and structure to other sites. Developers don't easily benefit from one another's work because most code is hidden, uncopyable, on the server. Unlike traditional websites, all code and content files in LimeBits sites are externally visible, easily copyable, and customizable. Authors and developers browse existing, open-source websites hosted on LimeBits, find one that already works with desired features, customize a copy of it to suit, deploy it, and thereby share it back to the community. Sites are usually customized and extended, rather than built from scratch. The LimeBits server is a passive storage device, driven by browser JavaScript. Authors and developers do no server-side programming, installation, or configuration. Websites on LimeBits store data and state via JavaScript using the standard WebDAV (REST-style) protocol. Read/write access controls and versioning are available. LimeBits is a public platform for website development, hosting, and sharing. It's currently in alpha deployment and is open for improvement and public participation. Jonathan A. Marshall is a computer scientist and senior software developer interested in expanding the use and acceptance of free/open-source ethics and technologies.

Overview In this presentation join Adobe Platform Evangelist, Kevin Hoyt, as he walks through migrating an application from the browser to the desktop using Adobe AIR. During the course of the migration, several desktop-oriented features will be explored to include native windowing, local file IO, monitoring network availability, and using system notifications. Though applicable to any developer using HTML/CSS/JavaScript, this application will focus on applying these features through the use of the jQuery framework.
